About this picture

Eickeloh is a municipality in the Heidekreis district in Lower Saxony .

geography

Eickeloh lies between Walsrode and Hanover , where Aller and Leine flow together. The community belongs to the joint community of Ahlden , which has its administrative seat in Hodenhagen . Eickeloh is located in the north German lowlands, in the foothills of the Lüneburg Heath.

The community is divided into the old, original village and the new parts of the village, which were mainly created after the Second World War.

history

The community is first mentioned as Eclo in a document from the Walsrode monastery in 1237. To the west of the village in the valley of the Aller is the castle site of Blankenhagen Castle , which was built around 1200 and of which two mounds still exist.

The Reformation was probably introduced from Walsrode as early as 1530. The first Lutheran pastor was Heinrich Veltmann.

politics

Since the last local election in September 2016, the Eickeloh municipal council has consisted of six representatives from the CDU and three representatives from the SPD.

Joachim Schoth (CDU) is the honorary mayor.

Culture and sights

The old church "Zum heiligen Kreuz", a Gothic brick building, dates from 1296. It retained its function as a church until 1868. In that year it was acquired by the Hodenberg family and converted into a burial place. In the 1990s it was extensively restored and refurbished. Since then it has been used as a church again and summer devotions take place in it during the warm season.

From 1866 to 1868 the parish erected a new building in neo-Gothic forms based on a design by Conrad Wilhelm Hase .

Since the Aller was looking for a new river bed further east in the 17th century, the Eickeloh municipality has since been cut by the river. As a result, agriculturally used areas, especially grassland and individual arable land, were separated from the village. A ferry connection was then set up. The ferry in its current form has been in operation since 1928 and works on the yaw rope principle . A rope is stretched over the Aller. The upkeep, operation and necessary maintenance is carried out by farmers and residents from Eickeloh, the ferrymen. Crossings are possible on certain days of the year and after registration.
