Fritz Schellbach

Arthur Friedrich Hermann Schellbach , called Fritz Schellbach (born March 2, 1905 in Leißling , † October 7, 1944 in Zöschen ), was a German communist and opponent of National Socialism .

Life

He was born in the house at today's address Karl-Marx-Platz 2 in Leißling. All that is known about Schellbach's life until 1933 is that he lived in Weißenfels , was a stonemason and functionary of the Communist Youth Association of Germany (KJVD) in Weißenfels. After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists in 1933, Schellbach continued his work illegally. Until 1935 he was a member of the illegal KPD sub-district management in Weißenfels, jointly responsible for the production and content of the newspaper "Bolschewik", an illegal organ of the KPD sub-district in Weißenfels. On February 18, 1935, he was arrested and, after a few months of pre- trial detention, on July 6, 1935, he was sentenced to nine years in prison for preparation for high treason , which he served in the “Red Ox” prison in Halle (Saale) . After the end of his detention in 1944, he was transferred to the labor education camp in Spergau , after its destruction in July 1944, he was transferred to the labor education camp in Zöschen . There he died on October 7, 1944, of exhaustion or a bomb disposal.

Honors

In memory of Fritz Schellbach, streets in Leißling and Weißenfels were named after him. A children's and youth home in Weißenfels also bears his name. There is a commemorative plaque on the house where he was born in Leißling.
