Fritz Schmidt-Clausing (born October 25, 1902 in Berlin ; † July 12, 1984 there ) was a German theologian , Protestant pastor as well as writer and church historian .

Life

Fritz Georg Hermann Schmidt-Clausing passed his Abitur and was initially a Roman Catholic priest. After his conversion to Protestantism, he studied Protestant theology and philology . He was then ordained a pastor . At an early age he became interested in questions of church history and delved into the peculiarities of the various Christian denominations . In particular, he dealt with the life and work of the reformed theologian Huldrych Zwingli , on whom he published several times. But he was also interested in the position of the denominational churches towards Jewish tradition.

In 1932 Schmidt-Clausing became pastor at the Church of St. Peter and Paul on Nikolskoe in Berlin-Wannsee . There he worked as a “vacationer pastor” and opened the church to the frequent visits of day trippers. During the Nazi era, he confessed to the goals of Nazi rule, in particular to its anti-Semitic paranoia. In 1939, Schmidt-Clausing declared that he was working at the Institute for Research and Elimination of Jewish Influence on German Church Life

After the Second World War, Schmidt-Clausing led the reconstruction of the community from 1947 to 1962 as a pastor at the Kaiser-Friedrich-Gedächtniskirche in Berlin . In the ruins of the church, the only remaining bell was made usable again and used to ring the welcome ring for those returning home to Russia until the 1950s . At the beginning of the Cold War , Schmidt-Clausing set a political example and made his community known - right up to the US newsreel, which gratefully took up the topic.

Fritz Schmidt-Clausing died in a West Berlin nursing home and was buried in the Wilmersdorf cemetery.
