Fritz Stather

Fritz Stather (born November 5, 1901 in Offenburg , † March 30, 1974 in Freiberg ) was a German chemist and outstanding scientist of the people .

Life

From 1930 Fritz Stather was head of the German Leather Institute (previously the German Research Institute for the Leather Industry ) in Freiberg and from 1935 at the same time professor at the Technical University of Dresden . Stather was a member of the Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten and, after 1933, also a member of the SA . In 1942 he was appointed provisional Nazi Reich representative for the leather industry, and in 1945 he was military economic leader .

From 1950 he was in the GDR department head for leather, shoes and rough goods at the German Office for Material and Goods Testing in Freiberg. He is the author of the work Gerbereichemie und Gernahmechnologie , which reached four editions from 1941 to 1967. In December 1955 he was honored with the honorary title of Great Scientist of the People . On September 15, 1958, he was accepted into the Saxon Academy of Sciences . Since 1961 he was a corresponding and since 1964 a full member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin .

For the tobacco products industry Stather was among the first who addressed the preparation and finishing of skins and the scientific knowledge of the tannery chemicals properly in the smoke currying and tobacco products finishing attempted to transfer. He owes the fundamental improvement in the dressing of many types of fur worldwide, in particular the correct evaluation of the options available in chrome tanning . A number of his and his co-workers' works have contributed a lot to the understanding and further development of empirically known methods of fur trimming and finishing.
