Fritz Straßni , also Fritz Strassni and Fritz Strassny , born Friedrich Straßny or Friedrich Stiassny , ( December 14, 1868 in Vienna - September 14, 1942 in the Theresienstadt ghetto ) was an Austrian actor and a celebrated character star of the Vienna Burgtheater for almost three decades .

Life

The merchant's son Friedrich Straßni - the spelling Stiassni or Stiassny is also often found - initially worked as a machine technician before he turned to studying medicine. At the age of 26, he finally decided to switch to acting.

Straßni made his stage debut on November 11, 1894 in the theater in der Josefstadt as "Riter Schnieder-Louis" in the pantomime Der Buckelhans . Strassni remained loyal to this important Viennese venue for the following years (until 1909) and worked his way from a batch actor to a recognized character actor (in antics as well as in conversational and dramatic pieces, e.g. in 1903 as "Samuel Goldfinger" in the comedy Arche Noah ) up. When there was no play, Straßni also appeared on summer stages in the spa town of Bad Ischl . From 1909 to 1938 Fritz Straßni was a member of the Burgtheater ensemble and was finally appointed chamber actor .

In the 1920s, the stage artist also appeared in a number of silent films, but changed his name slightly to Strassny. He only played supporting roles - dignitaries and sedate characters such as doctors and fathers, chancellors and professors. In the fairy tale film Dwarf Nose , the 53-year-old played a witch.

After the annexation of Austria in March 1938, the Jewish artist was immediately released from the Burgtheater.

On August 27, 1942, he was deported with Transport 38 Zug Da 507 from Vienna Theresienstadt, Ghetto, Czechoslovakia to the Theresienstadt ghetto, where he was murdered two and a half weeks later under unknown circumstances.
