action

Poland in the 18th century: The local Jewish community gathers at the grave of the Jew Leipke, who died a martyr's death many years ago. Then the rabbi begins to tell the moving story of Leipzig, who is both brave and sincere. He grew up under the care of a rural foster mother until he matured into an attractive and young man. His friendship with an estate manager soon brought him a job in Count Czaki's hunting guard. Soon his daughter, the beautiful Countess Helena, fell in love with Leipke and saw to it that he was appointed captain.

But established in his faith, Leipke remained steadfast against all temptations towards the noble lady and always rejected her declarations of love. This was not without consequences, because the young countess felt deeply offended and hurt by Leipke's rejection. She thought about retribution and then began to slander Leipke, following the biblical example of Joseph and Potiphar's wife. She accused him of chasing after her and threatening her. Then Helena's father locked the Jew in a tower. Only a few friends were able to free him. In order to avoid further dangers, Leipke fled with his bride and went into hiding.

There he found out that the enraged count had taken other Jews hostage in his place and subjected them to severe harassment. In order not to sin against his own people, Leipke returned voluntarily to the Count and had to endure humiliating torture as a result. But he remained unbowed in his will: He withstood all further attempts by the young countess to win him over after all. Broken by the rejections and shocked by the consequences of her actions for the Jewish community, the young countess attempted suicide and poisoned herself. Beside himself with pain and animated by a thirst for revenge, the relentlessly demanding atonement count decided to bury alive the man whom he blamed for the desperate act of his daughter.

Production notes

Jiskor was premiered in Vienna on October 26, 1924. The six- or siebenaktige film with a length of 2,511 meters and a prologue was also titled Remember ... out.

Leading actor Maurice Schwartz was a Russian-born, Jewish-American actor from the Yiddish Art Theater whom Sidney Goldin brought from New York for this film.

Jiskor was the last Austrian production by the Jewish-American film director Goldin.

Sound version

In 1933 the film, with additional material, was shown in a sound version under the slightly changed title Yiskor in the USA.

reception

The Neue Freie Presse wrote in its November 14th, 1924 issue: "The great esteem that the performances of this strange ensemble earned through its serious and ambitious struggle also deserves it in the film game. No less praise is for the author's low-tendency manuscript To pay tribute to Sakler. What the lord of the castle, his daughter and the count's hunter do is not cruel violence per se, but psychologically based effects: in the case of the hunter, jealousy of ambition, in the case of the young countess humiliated love, in the case of the count an untamed, medieval consciousness of mastery. "

"In this heroic saga, the Jews appear not only as romantic figures, but as one people among several peoples - a longed-for situation that was denied them in the multilingual Habsburg Empire."
