Frogg Café is an American jazz-rock - band resulting from the 1998 founded band Lumpy Gravy emerged. On July 2, 2010, their fifth studio album, Bateless Edge, was released on 10T Records.

history

Drummer and percussionist James Guarneri came Lumpy Gravy, which until then in and around New York City as Frank Zappa -Coverband worked, in 2000. At that time the quartet was changing and subsequently changed its name to Frogg Café .

Style and reception

Even after the dissolution of Lumpy Gravy, Frank Zappa's influences remained audible in the quite independent music Frogg Cafés, which was borrowed from the progressive rock bands of the 70s such as Camel , Gentle Giant and Kansas . This becomes particularly clear on the second album "Creatures"; for example Rod Chappell writes:

“Frogg Café's second CD entitled Creatures is a blend of all of the elements that made prog music great in the days when Yes ' Close To Edge , Genesis ' Selling England …, Gentle Giant's Free Hand and Zappa's Overnight Sensation, to name a few, were brand new. However, Frogg are not a cheap rip off, they are a very original band creating something all their own. (...) Their Zappa / jazz influence is evident in the opening of the tune ("Creatures"). "

"Frogg Café's second CD, named" Creatures ", is a mixture of all the elements that made progressive rock music great, as Yes '" Close to the Edge ", Genesis'" Selling England by the Pound ", Gentle Giants “Free Hand” and (Frank) Zappa's “Overnight Sensation”, to name just a few, were brand new. However, Frogg Café are not mere imitations, they are a very original band that do their own thing. (...) Your zappa / jazz influence can be clearly heard in the opening of the piece ( Creatures ). "

A departure from this scheme only took place in the 2010 album "Bateless Edge", which increasingly relies on elements from RIO and retro-prog .

success

The band became known to a larger audience at NEARfest 2005, where they performed with Kerry Livgren from Kansas. Nevertheless, and despite consistently positive reviews, Frogg Café still has the status of an insider tip.
