Bateless Edge is the fifth studio album by the US jazz rock band Frogg Café . It was released on July 2, 2010 via 10T Records.
construction
At the center of the album is the three-part suite Under Wuhu Son , the title of which is based on Emily Prager's book “Wuhu Diary: On Taking My Adopted Daughter Back to Her Hometown in China”. The other tracks have no relation to each other in terms of content, so that "Bateless Edge" is not a concept album despite this structure .
Style and reception
On “Bateless Edge”, Frogg Café moves away from the zappaesque sound of the previous albums . Although jazz influences can still be heard on the album, it covers a wide musical spectrum; This is how the basic structure of Pasta Fazeuhl was created after a performance by the Zeuhl band Magma at NEARfest 2003.
The final instrumental RIO piece Belgian Boogie Board , which contrasts with the comparatively quiet previous vocal piece From The Fence , is probably the most inaccessible piece on the album and is seen by some critics as a weak and by others as the high point of the album.
Despite this diversity of opinion, "Bateless Edge" received consistently positive reviews; for example Nik Brückner writes:
“With its daring but disarming casualness, which results in a real fusion of eclecticism, this disc is able to bring a lot to the point and thus offers a wealth of what is so great about Prog. Frogg Café have outdone themselves (and many, many others). "
On Progarchives.com the album got 5 out of 5 stars, the Dutch Progressive Rock Pages gave it 7 out of 10 points. The baby blue pages awarded “Bateless Edge” the award as “Tip of the Month August 2010”.

Trivia
The liner notes indicate that the opening piece Terra Sancta is dedicated to the children of those killed during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . The back of the CD cover shows a sunflower in front of the World Trade Center , which was photographed on August 28, 2001, just a few days before the attacks.
An instrumental prelude to Move over, I'm Driving was released on the download-only album "On The Lillypadd".
