Frontiers is a mod of the computer game Half-Life 2 and was specially developed by the artist group gold . The multiplayer game, which addresses the issue of flight and migration at European borders, was presented to the public by the group in February 2012 at the Center for Art and Media Technology and put online after years of research and development . A beta version of the game has been on display there since 2010 in a permanent exhibition.

Gameplay

The serious game Frontiers lets the player slip into the role of an African refugee or that of a border guard at critical points in different border areas. So it puts him z. B. to the Moroccan-Spanish border of Ceuta , in the Sahara between Niger and Algeria, but also to the container port of Rotterdam . The special thing about this game, which is atypical for a first person shooter , is that new game functions such as arrest or bribe have been implemented. The use of weapons is possible in individual levels, but is sanctioned with deduction of points and other actions.

With this complete redesign of the shooter principle, Frontiers falls into the category of total conversions . According to the developers, on the one hand the moral decisions are made by the player himself, on the other hand an awareness is created for the dramatic situation of refugees trying to get into Fortress Europe . The game plot is u. a. illustrated by original interviews with refugees and employees of aid organizations that were collected by the creators on several research trips and processed in the game and can be seen.

presentations

The game can be seen in a permanent exhibition at the ZKM Karlsruhe . Presentations, exhibitions and workshops took place. a. in museums and festivals such as the Serious Game Festival, New York, the New Cultures Festival of Art Moscow, Moscow, Pavilion Unicredit Bucharest, DOX Prague, Goethe-Institut Porto, in theaters such as the Thalia Theater Hamburg (Lessingtage 2012), Theaterkapelle Berlin, Brut Vienna, Garage X Vienna and many congresses and conferences, including at the symposium of the Center for Conflict Research.
