Football in Orizaba

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The football in Orizaba in Mexico's state of Veracruz is closely linked to the industrial development linked to the city. The city's first soccer team ( Orizaba AC ), for example, which was the first Mexican champions to enter the country's soccer annals in 1902/03 , emerged from the Scottish- dominated workforce at the Santa Gertrudis de Yute factory . Orizaba’s first soccer field , which was used by Orizaba AC as a home ground, was also built on their premises .

The Asociación Deportiva Orizabeña (ADO) was also founded in 1916 with the help of employees of a company. In this case, the constituent meeting took place on the premises of the oil company El Águila . The still young club soon set up a sports park on the premises of the Cocolapan textile factory , which served its team as a home ground for long stretches. The ADO was one of the ten founding members of the Mexican professional league in 1943, as was the team from the local Moctezuma brewery , Unión Deportiva Moctezuma , who played their home games on the premises of the brewery. This team won the Veracruz State League in 1938 and went down in history in 1943 as the winner of the cup competition of the 1942/43 season as the first winner of an official tournament in the era of Mexican professional football . Another club from Orizaba that won the Veracruz State League in 1935 was the Unión Deportiva Río Blanco team , which was founded in 1914 by the French manager Raoul Bouffier of the Río Blanco factory in the suburb of Orizaba of the same name . Two further national championships were won by the team from the CIDOSA textile factory in 1937 and 1940 .

Another important team was the Club Cervantes , which was founded in 1916 by the Spanish community of Orizaba.

Today the city is represented in professional football by the Albinegros de Orizaba .
