The scaly leg is by mites caused parasitic disease that occurs mainly in the lower limbs sections.

Mammals

In the case of domestic horses , domestic cattle and domestic sheep , fouling is mainly caused by mites of the genus Chorioptes . The skin changes occur mainly in the fetlock area of the hind limbs, but can also extend to the inside of the thigh , into the groin region and onto the udder .

The foot mange occurs mostly as a factor disease . Poor husbandry conditions and diet promote the occurrence of the disease. With conventional husbandry, it occurs mainly in winter, when the animals are kept in the barn, and gradually disappears with the upward movement of pasture. It leads to skin lesions and heavy crusting. In horses, a can malanders develop.

Birds

In birds , the scaly leg is also called Kalkbeinkrankheit (Engl. Scaly leg ), respectively. It is caused by mites of the genus Knemidokoptes and occurs mainly in hens and parrots . In addition to being localized on the foot, it can also affect the head appendages. It is transmitted through contact with infected animals.

The mites crawl under the scales of the barrel and trigger reactive hypertrophy of the skin with the formation of flaky crusts. The mite excretes feces that look similar to lime . Furthermore, severe itching, movement disorders and disorders of general well-being occur.

Combat

The disease is combated by optimizing the keeping conditions and administering acaricides as a herd treatment. Due to the way the Chorioptes mites live, local treatments or washes with Phoxim are significantly more effective than systemically acting macrocyclic lactones.

The control of poultry should include thorough cleaning and disinfection of the environment, or better still, moving the animals to another location. The mites can survive for up to a month in shed skin flakes and thus cause a renewed infection.
