The Fubuki ( Japanese 吹 雪 , German "snowstorm") was a destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the lead ship of the 24-unit Fubuki class . When they were put into service, they were among the most powerful destroyers in the world thanks to their armament previously reserved for light cruisers , a high maximum speed and a large operating radius.

history

The ship was built from 1926 to 1927 at the naval shipyard in Maizuru and entered service in 1928.

At the beginning of the end of the Pacific War , the Fubuki belonged to the 11th Destroyer Division in the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla and participated in the Japanese invasion of Malaya .

In the early morning hours of January 27, 1942, the light cruiser Sendai and the 11th and 20th destroyer flotilla suddenly encountered the Australian destroyer Vampire and the British destroyer Thanet . The Sendai and their destroyer group sank the Thanet . The Fubuki fired 102 shells at the Thanet .

From February 12 to 16, the Japanese light cruiser Yura merged with the 3rd destroyer flotilla. The ships carried out security and cleanup missions in the sea area off Sumatra , especially in the Bangka Strait and the Strait of Malacca , and searched for Allied ships fleeing Singapore. In March, the Fubuki was part of the landing forces escort during the invasion of Sumatra and later that month during the invasion of the Andaman Islands . During the attack in the Indian Ocean in April 1942, she was part of the fleet of Admiral Ozawa Jisaburō . She returned to Kure for repairs at the end of the month .

In early June 1942, the Fubuki took part in the Battle of Midway as part of the main Yamamoto Isoroku fleet . After further escorting and patrol tasks, including in the Indian Ocean, she was ordered to Davao in August , from where she intervened in the Battle of Guadalcanal .

From August 29 to October 7, 1942, the Fubuki brought reinforcements to Guadalcanal as part of the system known as the Tokyo Express by the Americans . On September 12, the Sendai and three destroyers (the Fubuki , the Shikinami , and the Suzukaze ) bombed the island for the first time.

On October 11, 1942, the Fubuki took part in the Battle of Cape Esperance . She was first attacked within range of the American heavy cruiser San Francisco . Then she was taken under concentrated fire by the American flotilla. As a result, the Fubuki sank in Ironbottom Sound ( 9 ° 6 ′  S , 159 ° 38 ′  E, coordinates: 9 ° 6 ′ 0 ″  S , 159 ° 38 ′ 0 ″  E ). About half of the crew (109 men) survived.
