Fulco I. d'Este († December 15, 1128 ) was the founder of the Italian line of the noble family of the Este .

Live and act

Fulco was the youngest son of Alberto Azzo II. D'Este from his second marriage with Garsende of Maine , daughter of Count Herbert I . After the death of his father in 1097, Fulco inherited the family's Italian estates, whose main focus was in Veneto around Mantua , Padua , Treviso and Verona , while his older half-brother, the Bavarian Duke Welf IV , received the property north of the Alps. However, this division was not recognized by Welf IV. It was only under his grandson Heinrich the Lion in 1154 that the heirs of Fulco were awarded the Italian goods in a contract. The Fulcos family named themselves after the Este castle in Veneto. Fulco first made connections with the nobility of Ferrara , whose rule the Estonians took over a century later.

family

Fulco had six children:

  • Azzo IV. († before 1145)
  • Bonifacio I († 1163)
  • Fulco II. († before 1172)
  • Alberto (after 1184)
  • Obizzo I. († December 25, 1193)
