Career

At the age of eight he began to learn the art of Japanese sword fighting ( kendō ). Over time he also learned the martial arts karate, aikidō and judo and developed a special interest in Kobudō , the fight with traditional weapons. He learned this art under the guidance of Sakagami Ryūsho and Taira Shinken , two respected Kobudō masters.

In 1956 he was awarded the black belt and won the East Japanese Karate Championship the following year . He cemented his reputation as a martial artist by emerging from the Japanese Kumite Championship in 1961 as one of the top eight competitors for the next three years. He continued to win a number of prestigious competitions and received a trophy from the Japanese Karate Association for outstanding performance. He also received certificates of recognition from MPs in the Japanese cabinet for his dedication to martial arts.

In 1965, Demura came to the United States at the invitation of Dan Ivan to teach Shitō-ryu, one of the four great styles of karate , in southern California . He is considered to be the first to teach authentic Shitō-Ryu-Karate and Kobudō in the USA. He quickly became a prominent figure in the world of American karate, not least because of his knowledgeable and entertaining way of organizing the lessons and his demonstrations. In 1969 he received the title of "Karate Sensei of the Year" and entered the prestigious "Hall of Fame" of the Black Belt magazine. In 1975 he received this honor again, this time with the title "Martial Artist of the Year". Many other international awards followed.

During the 70s and 80s he published a number of books on karate and Kobudō for Ohara Publishing. Many of his publications in various magazines enjoy great popularity among readers due to a dynamic and insightful approach to the martial arts.

He also shows his art in various Hollywood productions, including as a double for Pat Morita in the role of Mr. Miyagi in the Karate Kid series .

Today he is the president and chief instructor of Shitō-Ryu Genbu-Kai International, an organization that unites 20 nations and thousands of members. He teaches in his Dōjō in Santa Ana (California) , gives seminars and supports competitive events worldwide. Although he has lived in the US for over 40 years and speaks very good English , he is still a Japanese citizen.
