Headquarters

Funai Denki KK ( Japanese 船 井 電機 株式会社 , Funai Denki Kabushiki-gaisha , English Funai Electric Co. Ltd. ) is a Japanese manufacturer and distributor of consumer electronics .

history

1959-1969

The company was founded in April 1951 by Tetsurō Funai in Osaka as Funai Mishin Shōkai ( 船 井 ミ シ ン 商会 , English Funai Sewing Machine Company ). From April 1959 the company produced transistor radios and was extremely successful with it. In September 1961, the name was changed and Funai Denki KK was founded in Osaka, Japan. Shortly thereafter, Funai expanded into the North American market, where the “Funai Clock Radio” became a first sales hit in the sixties. North America was the largest sales market worldwide and Tetsuro Funai quickly recognized the potential there. In March 1964, Chūgoku Funai Denki KK was founded as the first factory in Hiroshima (Japan) and the Funai Group was founded . Another great sales success was the “eight-track car cassette radio ”, in which Funai became number 1 worldwide. In 1976, the headquarters of Osaka moved to the neighboring Daitō .

The "Funai Production System"

When there was an economic crisis in August 1971, in connection with which the fixed exchange rate peg to the US dollar was abandoned and the yen was revalued, the global export of Japanese products was affected. For Funai, the consequence of the crisis was a change from the so-called “Work Order System” to the “Sales Order System”. The individual subsidiaries had to become more efficient, sell more and the internal pressure of competition increased. In 1977 Funai managers were trained at the Toyota plant in Hamura . As a result of this training, the "Funai Production System" was introduced with the aim of increasing efficiency in production. Funai's company guideline was then as now: " People are the key to success ".

Expansion to Europe, Asia and the USA

From the beginning of the 1980s, Funai was one of the first manufacturers to build a CVC and later a VHS video recorder . In January 1980 the company continued to expand in Europe. Funai Electric Trading (today Funai Germany ) was founded in Hamburg. Furthermore, the sales structures in the west were expanded and improved. Sales offices were set up in Great Britain, France, Poland and Germany and new factories were set up, for example in Poland, China and Thailand. In April 1989, Funai Electric Sdn. Bhd. founded in Malaysia.

In May 1991 the Funai Corporation Inc. was founded on the American market. Today it is responsible in North America for the production and sales of the brands "Emerson", "Sylvania", "Philips" and "Magnavox". In June 1991 the first own research institute was established in Japan in order to guarantee the position as an innovator in the electronics industry. In 1992 and 1994, the establishment of the factory in Dongguan (China) and the establishment of the factory in Zhong Shan (China) responded to the strongly increased demand. Along with the construction of the new factories in China, the "Funai Production System" was further developed. In order to be able to offer a broader range of services, Funai Service was founded in Japan in January 1996. In addition, from October 1997, new marketing channels were opened up in the USA through large trading partners such as Walmart . In 1999 the company went public in Japan.

In 2001 the company entered the LCD market.

The further expansion of the company led to the establishment of Funai Thailand Co. Ltd. in July 2003 . The expansion in Europe progressed and in October 2006 Funai Electric (Polska) sp. zoo founded in Nowa Sól (Poland).

June 2007 marked the start of production at Funai Electric (Polska) sp. zoo In order to better adapt to the market conditions of the respective country, the European branches in Germany, England, Poland and France became independent in July 2007 and independent of the headquarters in Hamburg. In April 2008 there was a change in management at the top of the group. Tetsuro Funai became chairman and Tomonori Hayashi became the new president.

In order to further expand the market position in North America, in April 2008 the LCD division of Philips for North America was taken over. Funai sees the next step in the company's development to reduce its dependence on China, as the costs for the five Chinese plants continue to rise. In North America, expansion continued in April 2009 with the establishment of P&F Mexicana, SA DE CV in Mexico. In February 2012, Funai India Private Limited was founded as a production facility in Mumbai (India).

present

In response to the profound economic and social changes of the digital age, product development and research are increasingly becoming the focus of the company. Both new locations for production factories and further, global expansion are being put to the test and will be adapted to future global changes. In January 2013, Philips tried to sell its consumer electronics division to Funai. However, this sale failed due to breaches of contract on the part of Funai.
