Funerary was a funeral doom and sludge band founded in 2013 and disbanded in 2017 .

history

Fuernary was a short-lived band from Phoenix , Arizona . After the group was formed in the spring of 2013, performed early on in the southern states and self-published the download single Beneath the Black Veil , several labels tried to create Funerary. The debut album Starless Aeon was then released in 2014 by Midnite Collective , Sentient Ruin Laboratories and Vendetta Records . The album was positively received internationally and hailed as “passionately crushing and atmospheric Doom Metal ” as well as a “new, exciting take on Funeral Doom”. The music is “atmospheric, deep and soul-shattering emotional”, “as beautiful as it is terrifying” and the album is a “crazy” and “cosmic” work. After further appearances, which the band made especially in California, a split EP was released in 2015 with the Italian sludge band Ooze . For the webzine Cvlt Nation , the ep was praised as a "monstrous and oversized" release. Two years after the release and numerous other appearances, the band announced their breakup in April 2017.

style

The music played by Funerary is described by Cody Davis in his Funeral Friday column written for Metal Injection as a crossover of Funeral Doom and Blackened Sludge and compared to groups like Lycus and Fórn . Asunder , Graves at Sea and Noothgrush are identified as other influences . For Cvlt Nation the style is described similarly. Corrupted , Mornful Congregation and Esoteric are named as comparative variables . The music is reduced, heavy and cacophonic at the same time. Acoustic feedback from the guitars and expansive drumming shape the instrumental sound while the singing alternates between screaming and roaring.

"Bonds in the Black Metal [...] act here as an accessory, which is particularly to be stated in terms of the vocals, but oscillate selbige of hysterical about beating croaked to gloomy growls [.]"
