history

The Funkhaus Köln had been the headquarters of Deutsche Welle in Cologne since the early 1980s . In 1974, construction began on the new radio station Am Raderberggürtel designed by the Stieldorf planning group for DW and DLF; the topping-out ceremony took place on May 24, 1977. The official inauguration took place in 1980. On the occasion of the station's 50th anniversary in 2003, Deutsche Welle moved from Cologne to Bonn to the Schürmann building in the federal district . One reason was the exposure to asbestos in the rooms of the old broadcasting house.

In July 2013 it became known that the radio house on the Raderberggürtel was to be demolished and that a new residential complex with 500 residential units should be built on the site by 2019. The building was about to be blown up. Because of the amount of asbestos , the building would have had to be gutted extensively beforehand. The demolition originally planned for spring 2017 was postponed to 2018 in autumn 2016.

The demolition work on February 15, 2020

According to the Kölnischer Rundschau of September 12, 2018, however, one refrains from blasting (even partially). Instead, a conventional “top-down” dismantling principle will take place. The work began in 2019 with the help of cranes and is expected to be completed in March 2021.
