Geant du Manio
The Géant du Manio ( German "Riese von Manio" - also called Menhir aux serpents - German "Snake Menhir " ) is an approximately 6.5 m high " Menhir indicateur" west of the Cromlechs of Kerlescan , about 50.0 m south of the Quadrilatère du Manio , on a hill near Kerlescan, northeast of Carnac , in the Morbihan department in Brittany in France . It is the largest menhir in Carnac and dates from the Neolithic Age .
During the excavation in 1922, five polished stone axes were uncovered on the menhir . Engraved snakes have been found at the foot of the menhir.
The menhirs begin to evoke a kind of esoteric passion in the 18th century. In 1781 a Druid order was even created. The order, valid as a sect, was opposed in 1836 by the General Inspector for Monument Preservation, Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870). He gave the order to compile an inventory of the French historical monuments to be protected, in which the neighboring stone setting and the menhir in 1900 were entered as Monument historique .
