The Göttingen Institute for Democracy Research is a research facility at the Georg August University of Göttingen . It was founded in 2010 out of the working group for party research at the Political Science Institute there and serves in particular to communicate social science findings between politics and society . In addition to the scientific component, the institute also combines didactic and advisory aspects. The declared aim is to counteract the lack of democratic understanding and the so-called political disaffection with alternative methods. For example, students are involved in scientific research early on. In addition, the institute is involved in the political science teaching of the Faculty of Social Sciences. 60 employees work in Göttingen a. a. Felix Butzlaff , Lars Geiges , Stephan Klecha and Otto-Eberhard Zander , until September 2017 the director was the political scientist Franz Walter (professor and editor of INDES - Journal for Politics and Society ). In the 2017/2018 winter semester, the professorship and head of the institute will be represented by Stine Marg (managing director). Numerous publications on topics such as social analysis , political parties and politicians have appeared so far.

The institute is continuing the series of Göttingen Studies on Party Research of the Working Group for Party Research and installed the series of Göttingen Young Research . In cooperation with the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture , the institute designed the worksheets on democracy education in elementary schools . Furthermore, the Göttingen themed books on contemporary issues of politics, society and social culture are published, a yearbook of the Göttingen Institute for Democracy Research ( ibidem-Verlag ) and the studies of the Göttingen Institute for Democracy Research on the history of political and social controversies ( transcript Verlag ) are published.

The institution received great media interest in its results on PEGIDA and the pedophilia debate of the Greens , as well as the study "Right-wing extremism and xenophobia in East Germany" 2017. The study was carried out on behalf of the Federal Government's Eastern Commissioner and accused of methodological errors and rejected for a lack of scientific diligence.
