Çelik Gülersoy
Çelik Gülersoy (born September 23, 1930 in Hakkâri ( Turkey ); † July 6, 2003 in Istanbul ) was a journalist , lawyer and long-time chairman of the Turkish touring and automobile club TTOK . Gülersoy made a name for himself as an important monument protector who saved numerous important art monuments in Istanbul from destruction.
Family background
Gülersoy was born in Hakkari, eastern Turkey, in 1930, where his father was doing military service. The family originating from the Ottoman capital Istanbul produced important Islamic legal scholars ( Qādīs and Muftis ) during the Ottoman period . a. also the progressive writer Ahmed Hikmet .
Live and act
Gülersoy's family had lived in Istanbul since 1933, where he grew up and was involved in the Turkish automobile club TTOK as early as the 1950s while studying . From 1961 he worked in the club's legal department and became its managing director in 1966 . Gülersoy initiated important initiatives for monument protection in Istanbul and published a large number of publications and books . Gülersoy also collected literature on the city and founded the “Istanbul Library” in 1985, which today houses one of the most important collections on the city's history.
For his commitment to the protection of the Bosporus metropolis, Gülersoy received numerous Turkish and international awards and a. the Sedat Simavi Prize for Social Sciences (1979).
