Validan Kışanak (born June 15, 1961 in Elazığ , Turkey ) is a Turkish politician of Kurdish descent and former mayor of the city of Diyarbakır . Kışanak was previously a member of the Party of Peace and Democracy (BDP) in the Turkish parliament and co-chair of the BDP. In addition, she was a consultant and coordinator for social projects for the city administration of Bağlar in the “Büyükşehir belediyesi” ( city ​​municipality ) Diyarbakır.

She has been in prison in Turkey since 2016 and was sentenced to 14 years and three months in 2019 for “membership in a terrorist organization” .

Life

Kışanak initially studied Turkish at Dicle University in Diyarbakır, but dropped out. In 1986, Kışanak began studying journalism and public relations at the Faculty of Communication Studies at Ege Üniversitesi in Izmir . After graduating in 1990, she worked as a journalist for various newspapers, including in 1991 for Yeni Ülke. In 1992 she was Adana correspondent for Özgür Gündem . She later became editor-in-chief of the Istanbul newspaper. After the newspaper was banned, she worked in a leading position for Özgür Ülke. Until 2002 she worked for various newspapers, including as a columnist for the Yeniden Özgür Gündem .

She ran successfully as an independent candidate for the parliamentary elections in Turkey in 2007 for the province of Diyarbakır . After the election, she joined the Democratic Society Party (DTP). Kışanak appeared in the 2008 film “What a beautiful democracy”, which reports on the election campaign of Turkish women.

In early 2009 she prepared a bill to allow the use of the letters Q, W and X from the Kurmanci version of the Latin alphabet in the Turkish public.

After the DTP was banned on December 11, 2009, giltan Kışanak joined the BDP. In 2010, the BDP elected Kışanak together with Selahattin Demirtaş as co-chair. She remained the co-chair until 2014. For the parliamentary elections in June 2011 she ran as an independent candidate for Siirt Province and was re-elected. In the 2014 local elections she ran for the mayor's office in the city of Diyarbakir and won with around two thirds of the votes.

Law enforcement and litigation

After the 1980 military coup, she was arrested at the age of 19 and tortured in the Diyarbakir military prison. She was detained in prison director Esat Oktay Yıldıran's dog kennel for six months because she did not get up when the director walked in. She stayed in prison for a total of 2 years at the time.

On the evening of October 25, 2016, she was arrested and in custody taken. According to a report by the state news agency Anadolu, links or contacts with the PKK are alleged. For the time being, state trustees of the Turkish Ministry of the Interior will take over their place, as in similar cases.

In November 2016, according to NTV, the public prosecutor's office announced that it was demanding a 230-year prison sentence for Kışanak for propaganda for the PKK and the establishment and management of an armed terrorist organization.

In July 2018, according to several news portals, there was a court hearing at which the public prosecutor's office confirmed the demand for a prison sentence of 230 years for “establishing and running an organization” and for the support of the PKK and the DTK .

Private life

Validan Kışanak is married, has one daughter and is a member of the Alevi denomination .
