Günter Bach (born February 27, 1937 ) is a former German football player from Erfurt . In the 1950s and 1960s he played for SC Turbine and FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of the GDR Football Association .

Athletic career

Günter Bach made his debut in the GDR league for SC Turbine Erfurt on November 3, 1957. In the encounter on the 22nd game day SC Turbine - SC Motor Karl-Marx-Stadt (3-0), he was instead of the previous standard - Striker Günther Vollrath used on the half-left attack side. In this position, Bach played in three other point games until the end of the season. In the following season, 1958, Bach won a regular place with 21 appearances in 26 point games and was mainly used as a half-left striker. In the 1959 season, the SC Turbine league team was switched to various positions, and Bach moved to the right in the attack. There, too, he asserted himself with 23 league appearances in the starting eleven, but could not prevent the Erfurt from having to end the season as relegated.

With Günter Bach, who played 20 of the 26 second division games, Turbine Erfurt immediately made it back up. After the end of the 1960 season, the GDR football schedule was changed to the summer-spring rhythm, so the 1961/62 league season ran for 39 rounds. Of these, Bach completed 34 games in which he was still called up on the right attacking side. In 1962/63, from now on with 26 league rounds, Bach fell out of the starting line-up, up to the 17th matchday he had only played four league games. Only then did he come back regularly, now mainly as a midfielder. In 1963/64 Bach was only absent on two match days and played again in the storm, alternating half-left and half-right. Again, the season ended with relegation for the SC Turbine. This time, too, the immediate return to the league succeeded, Bach was a midfielder in 25 of the 30 GDR league games. From the 1965/66 season onwards, the people of Erfurt went through a phase as an elevator team . For Bach, too, things were no longer successful. In 1965/66 he only played on the 1st and 8th matchday in the league, but was taken over by FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt, which was spun off from the sports club on January 26, 1966. Even in the renewed GDR league interlude in 1966/67, he did not get beyond six league stakes.

After participating in the successful recovery for the third time, Bach ended his career as a competitive athlete in the summer of 1967. Within eleven years he had played 172 point games for SC Turbine and FC Rot-Weiß, 121 of them in the top division. Although he had played mostly as a striker, he only managed 15 goals, 10 in the league. Bach remained loyal to FC Rot-Weiß even after his playing career and was involved in the youth department as a coach and coordinator. In this capacity he looked after the later national player Clemens Fritz for several years .
