Günter Benndorf

Günter Benndorf (born October 11, 1925 in Pößneck ; † November 6, 1992 in Bayreuth ) was a German singer ( tenor ).

Life

Benndorf initially trained as a precision optician . During the Second World War he became a prisoner of war and found singing. He then completed a vocal course with Kurt Wichmann at the Liszt School of Music Weimar .

In 1952 he made his debut as Turiddu in Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana at the Greizer Theater. He subsequently performed in Bernburg and Rudolstadt. In 1956 he went to the Magdeburg Theater . From 1959 to 1964 he was engaged at the Mecklenburg State Theater in Schwerin . In 1964 he moved to the Dresden State Opera .

From 1967 to 1984 he worked at the Karl-Marx-Stadt Theater (Chemnitz). He developed from a lyrical tenor into a sought-after Wagner and hero tenor who made guest appearances and concert tours. Benndorf sang various roles by Wagner and Verdi (including Simon Boccanegra (Gabriele Adorno), La forza del destino (Alvaro)), as well as Fidelio (Florestan), Der Freischütz (Max), Enoch Arden (Klas), Ariadne auf Naxos (Bacchus) , Tosca (Cavaradossi) and Mathis the painter (General Albrecht) as well as The Condemnation of Lukullus (Lukullus) as the last role.
