Günter Graf (politician, 1934)

Günter Graf (born September 17, 1934 in Suhl ) is a former politician of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), university professor and works manager in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). From 1970 to 1978 he was deputy minister for ore mining, metallurgy and potash in the GDR.

Life

Graf, the son of a beer brewer, began after high school and two internships in the VEB Mansfeld Combine "Wilhelm Pieck" in Eisleben and in the VEB Berliner Metallhütten und Halbzeugwerke in 1954 to study at the Bergakademie Freiberg , which he graduated in 1959 as a graduate engineer. As a schoolboy he joined the Free German Youth (FDJ) in 1949 and became a member of the SED in 1958.

After graduating, Graf became a research assistant at the Bergakademie and received his doctorate in 1964. In the same year he became chief metallurgist and senior employee in the VEB Mansfeld combine "Wilhelm Pieck" . In 1969/70 he was Secretary for Economic Policy in the SED district leadership of the Mansfeld Combine.

In 1970 Graf became Deputy Minister for Ore Mining, Metallurgy and Potash in East Berlin . In this function he was from 1971 to 1978 head of the GDR delegation in the permanent commission for non-ferrous metallurgy within the Council for Mutual Economic Aid (RGW). In 1974/75 he also completed a course of studies at the SED's "Karl Marx" party college .

In 1978 Graf was replaced as deputy minister and in 1979 became director of the research institute for non-ferrous metals of the VEB Mansfeld-Kombinat "Wilhelm Pieck" . In 1980 he was appointed professor at the Bergakademie Freiberg. In addition, from 1980 to 1986 he was head of the Metallic Materials Group in the Research Council of the GDR .

In 1986 Graf became the successor of Otto Rischel , General Director of the VEB mining and smelting combine "Albert Funk" Freiberg . After the reunification and the peaceful revolution in the GDR , he was replaced in early 1990. He later worked as a specialist book author and industrial consultant and retired in 1993.

Graf lives in Freiberg in Saxony.
