Günter Josef Krejs

Günter Josef Krejs (born March 14, 1945 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs ) is an Austrian internist specializing in gastroenterology .

Life

Günter Krejs graduated from the Piarist High School in Krems with distinction in 1963 and studied human medicine from 1963 to 1969 at the Medical University of Vienna and the Medical Faculty of the University of Zurich . After completing his doctorate, he completed the cycle at the Krems ad Donau hospitals and in Vienna. This was followed by specialist training in internal medicine with special consideration of gastroenterology at the Triemli city hospital in Zurich .

From 1975 he was a Faculty Member (first Instructor, then Assistant Professor, then 1984, Professor of Internal Medicine) at the Southwestern Medical School in Dallas , Texas. In 1986 Krejs was appointed full professor to the chair for internal medicine in Graz. There he was the clinic director until 2005 and head of the clinical department for gastroenterology and hepatology until his retirement in 2013 . Now the internationally known gastroenterologist teaches at the Karl Landsteiner University for Health Sciences in Krems .

Scientific contribution

Krejs wrote over 250 original papers and 200 reviews and book chapters. And he gave over 400 lectures at national and international congresses. His publications include the first descriptions of microscopic colitis (Gastroenterology 1980) and somatostatinoma syndrome (New Engl J Med 1979).

honors and awards

Krejs was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award of the UEG (United European Gastroenterology Federation) in 2016 and with the Master of WGO (World Gastroeneterology Organization) in 2017. As well as nine other honorary memberships in medical-scientific societies, including Austrian societies for surgery, internal medicine, gastroenterology & Hepatology, Nutrition and Pathology.

  • 1998: President, 11th World Congress of Gastroenterology, Vienna
  • 1999: President, Van Swieten Society
  • 2002–2011: Member of the Supreme Medical Council of the Republic of Austria
  • 2007–2009: President of the Bockus International Society of Gastroenterology
  • Since 2012: Speaker (secretary) of the natural science class of the Sudeten German Academy of Sciences and Arts (Munich), since 2015 Vice President of the Academy, since 2018 President of the Academy.
