Athletic career

Until 1964, the striker Günter Kluge played for the company sports community (BSG) Motor Görlitz in the third-class district league Dresden . At the age of 25, he moved to Vorwärts Meiningen in the Suhl district league at the beginning of the 1964/65 season . With the army team, he became district champion in 1965 and rose with her to the second-rate GDR league. There he was a regular for seven seasons and was always Meininger's top scorer . In 1967/68 he scored 25 goals in 30 league appearances and became the most successful goalscorer in the entire GDR league. He repeated this success a season later with 22 goals. In the seven seasons for Vorwärts Meiningen, Kluge played 196 of 202 league games in which he scored 134 goals.

In the summer of 1972 he returned to Görlitz and rejoined his old BSG, which in the meantime was back in the district league under the name Motor WAMA. In the 1973/74 season he temporarily helped out with the neighboring army sports community Vorwärts Löbau for nine GDR league games, in which he was able to score five goals. Kluge continued to play in Görlitz until 1977 and was again district champion and promoted GDR league that year. In the following GDR league season, Kluge no longer took part, as he had previously ended his career as a footballer at the age of 37. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of NFV Gelb-Weiß Görlitz, the successor to BSG Motor, Günter Kluge was elected to the Görlitz eleven in 2009.
