Athletic career

Günter Minnich already found international recognition at the age of 18 when he was accepted into the squad of the GDR junior national team . By 1962 he played six international matches with her as a defender. Until 1960 he played in the company sports community (BSG) Lokomotive in Dessau , most recently in the fifth class district class A Halle.

For the 1961/62 season, Minnich moved to the upper division SC Chemie Halle. This season lasted from March 1961 to June 1962, as GDR football was switched from the calendar year game to the summer-spring rhythm. In the upper league 39 point games had to be completed. Minnich benefited from the early failure of Werner Okupniak, who was supposed to be the standard defender, and made his first league appearance on the fifth match day. Again and again as a replacement for players who were not ready for action, he came to 19 league games by the end of the season, in which he was always called up as a left defender. In this position, Minnich also played in the final of the GDR soccer cup competition in 1961/62, which the Halle residents won 3-1 over SC Dynamo Berlin .

In 1962/63 he did not get past the standard defense with Klaus Urbanczyk , Klaus Hoffmann and Okupniak and was only used six times when Okupniak was injured. In the seasons 1963/64 (relegation to the GDR League ), 1964/65 (GDR League) and 1965/66 (Oberliga, conversion to Hallescher FC Chemie) Minnich was not called up in the first team of the Halle club. After he had been used twice in the second half of the 1966/67 season as a replacement for Bernd Bransch and Ulrich Rothe in the league, he was dismissed at the end of the season at HFC.

Minnich joined the GDR league club SG Dynamo Eisleben , where he played 115 second division games (out of a total of 140) from 1967 to 1972 and, in contrast to his senior league time, also scored eight goals. After the end of the 1971/72 season, he ended his career as a high-performance athlete at the age of 30.
