Günter Scheib (born January 27, 1947 in Haan ) is a German politician ( SPD ). He was mayor of Hilden from 1994 to 2009.

Life

After graduating from high school, Günter Scheib studied English, history, philosophy and education at the University of Cologne . He completed his legal traineeship at the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Gymnasium in Hilden. Later he was senior teacher at Haaner Gymnasium .

In 1972 he joined the SPD via a first-time voter initiative and then became chairman of the local association.

In October 1978 he was elected to the Hilden City Council for the first time as a candidate for the SPD. In this role he became chairman of the Council's Appeals Committee.

Mayor's office

In 1989 he was elected deputy to the then Hilden mayor Ellen Wiederhold . After their resignation, he was elected the last honorary mayor of the city in November 1994. After his election, he resigned from the position of chairman of the local SPD association. Scheib said: "I want to be a trustworthy contact person for all citizens and not answer with SPD politics."

He was re-elected in 1999 and 2004, this time as the first full-time mayor in Hilden.

During his tenure, numerous social and cultural projects were implemented, such as humanitarian aid for former forced laborers and the promotion of research into the subject of "Forced Labor in Hilden". This was followed by the inauguration of the Emir Sultan Mosque, the establishment of a "sports and culture foundation", the inauguration of the new youth center "Area 51" and the conversion of the former building of the Helmholtz grammar school into the culture and further education center Altes Helmholtz with music school, the adult education center , the city archives, an association of musicians and singers, the recreational community for the disabled and non-disabled and the youth art school KuKuK.

On September 24, 2008, Mayor Scheib and Markus F. Schmidt, CEO of Stadtwerke Düsseldorf AG, signed the contract for the takeover of 49.9% of Stadtwerke Hilden GmbH by Stadtwerke Düsseldorf.

In the same month, Scheib announced that he would not run again for the mayor's office of Hilden. In 2009 he took leave of all political offices.

When he left, Scheib received the gold ring of honor from the city of Hilden as the city's highest honor. Scheib accepted the award, but insisted that the money for the ring be credited to the account for social purposes, so that it would benefit the needy citizens of Hildes or its twin cities.
