history

Use of the building as a school

In 1912 the Barmer architect Peter Klotzbach won the architectural competition for the construction of a new school . Construction began in August 1913, and on January 26, 1915, the new building on the property at Gerresheimer Strasse 20 was inaugurated as a “planting and care center for the German spirit”. On January 27, 1915, the secondary school , which opened on April 13, 1910, moved into the new building. After its construction, it was initially housed in the building of the Protestant elementary school Schulstrasse and from 1912 in the school building of the former Catholic girls' school on Heiligenstrasse.

As a result of the First World War , Scottish soldiers confiscated the building as part of the Allied occupation of the Rhineland and used it as barracks from December 17, 1918 to October 31, 1919 . Only then could it be used again by the municipal secondary school. In 1922 the Realschule was renamed Helmholtz Realschule , from 1923 Helmholtz Upper Realschule . The reason for the name was the 100th birthday of the physicist Hermann von Helmholtz on August 31, 1921. Another renaming took place in 1936, now in "Helmholtz School, municipal high school for boys".

During the Second World War , school operations were interrupted again. The army used the building from 28 February 1945 as a military hospital . After US troops marched into Hilden on May 16, 1945, they used the building as barracks. Lessons at the Helmholtz School took place in the youth center on Hagelkreuz . From October 15, 1945, school operations took place again in the building on Gerresheimer Strasse.

In 1946 the school was named Helmholtz-Gymnasium . After the difficult post-war years, a donation from entrepreneur and later honorary citizen Walter Wiederhold helped the building and the school out of need in 1951 . In 1974 the Helmholtz-Gymnasium moved into a new building on Holterhöfchen .

From 1975 the old building was for a reconstruction of the Theodor-Heuss - Hauptschule used. From September 1987 to August 1, 2001 there was a branch of the Mettmann district vocational school in the building .

Conversion of the building into a culture and training center

In October 1998 the school building was placed under monument protection and thus included in the list of architectural monuments in Hilden . On January 31, 2001, the decision was made to transform the building into a culture and training center . In 2001 the property including the building was sold to the property company of Stadtwerke Hilden , the city of Hilden became a tenant. After renovation, the “Altes Helmholtz” cultural and advanced training center opened on November 6, 2004 .
