Günter Umberg
Günter Umberg (* 1942 in Bonn ) is a German painter and exhibition curator . From 2000 to 2007 he was professor of painting at the State Art Academy in Karlsruhe .
Live and act
Umberg studied from 1963 to 1969 at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Antwerp as well as at the Cologne factory schools. Since 1970 he has been working as a freelance artist in Cologne. He initially dealt with fundamental questions in painting. He began painting black pictures during this period, for which he became known. The Cologne-based gallery owner Rolf Ricke gave decisive impetus to increase awareness . In 1982 he founded the “Room for Painting” in Cologne. It was a private, non-commercial exhibition space. Umberg invited international artists to individual presentations during the six years of existence of the “Room for Painting”. Robert Ryman, Brice Marden, Alan Uglow, Joseph Marioni , Joseph Albers, Gotthard Graubner, Ole Baertling, Keith Sonnier but also Helmut Dorner, Ingo Meller and Ulrich Wellmann showed their works in the “Room for Painting” and thus influenced the discussion about contemporary art .
"The emphasized material character of the color contradicts the illusion of an immaterial depth, which the picture also suggests in the context of its surroundings."
In addition, Günter Umberg has exhibited his own pictures in the context of other artists and art collections. At the invitation of art institutions, he realized exhibition projects for the Museum Ludwig in Cologne (2000), for the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt (2002 and 2005) and for Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich (2006). In 2005 Günter Umberg received the Fred Thieler Prize for Painting, Berlin.
Günter Umberg has been married to the painter Elisabeth Vary since 1970 . He lives in Cologne and Corberon (France).
