Günter Wendland (born June 4, 1931 in Königsberg ; † March 9, 2003 ) was a German lawyer. From 1986 to 1989 he was attorney general of the GDR .

Life

The son of a savings bank employee and a saleswoman attended elementary school from 1937 and upper secondary school in Königsberg from 1941. From 1941 to 1945 he belonged to the German Young People of the Hitler Youth and was the youth leader.

After relocating to the Soviet zone of occupation in Germany, he graduated from high school with Abitur in Grabow (Ludwigslust district) from 1945 to 1948. From 1948 to 1957 he was a member of the FDJ , and in 1950/51 he was an instructor and department head for agitation and propaganda at the FDJ-KL Ludwigslust . In 1951 he became a member of the SED and attended the FDJ state youth school in Dömitz . Subsequently, until 1952 he was an instructor and sector leader of the FDJ regional management in Schwerin and 1952/53 instructor of the FDJ district management in Neubrandenburg. He completed a law degree at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1953 to 1957 with a degree in law. From 1957 he worked as a public prosecutor in Schwerin and Perleberg. From 1959 to 1962 he was district public prosecutor for the district of Perleberg. In 1962 he became deputy district attorney in Schwerin and from 1964 to 1986 he worked as deputy attorney general of the GDR. In 1966 he became a member of the Central Board and in 1980 Vice President of the Association of Lawyers in the GDR (until January 1990). As the successor to Josef Streit , he was prosecutor general of the GDR from June 1986 to December 1989. He was also a candidate for the Central Committee of the SED from April 1986 to December 1989 .

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, he was admitted to the bar in 1990.
