Günther Friedrich (mineralogist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Günther Friedrich (born April 15, 1929 in Stuttgart ; † November 24, 2014 in Aachen ) was a German mineralogist and university professor at RWTH Aachen University . He was an expert in the formation of marine manganese nodules .

Life

Friedrich began studying geology and mineralogy in Stuttgart in 1948 and graduated in Heidelberg in 1954 , where he did his doctorate under Paul Ramdohr with the thesis The Granite Massif of Melibokus in the Odenwald and its peripheral zone . After completing his doctorate, he moved to RWTH Aachen University, where he became an assistant to Doris Schachner at the Institute for Mineralogy and Depository Studies. After his habilitation in 1962 and a two-year research stay in North America, he set up the department for applied deposit theory at RWTH Aachen University. In 1968 he and many other professors from RWTH Aachen University were among the signatories of the “ Marburg Manifesto ”, which formed an academic front against the emerging co-determination at universities. In 1975 he was appointed to the chair for mineralogy and deposit science as successor to Schachner and thus also director of the institute of the same name. He held this position until his retirement in 1994.

During his time as director of the institute, he was temporarily a member of the Geo Commission of the German Research Foundation , a member of the board of trustees of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources , co-founder and president of the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits , and chairman of the German Mineralogical Society .

Research work

Friedrich was one of the leading experts in the field of manganese nodules , he and his colleagues made several trips with the research vessel Sonne to explore and take samples of these ore deposits formed on the seabed. In 1978 Friedrich was chief scientist on the 4th voyage of the research vessel with the target area Peru Basin and on the 6th voyage to the sea area near Hawaii .
