Günther Hölbl

Günther Hölbl (born November 12, 1947 in Vienna ) is an Austrian Egyptologist and ancient historian .

Günther Hölbl studied at the University of Vienna first Latin and history teacher. In 1972 he obtained his master's degree. This was followed by a doctoral degree in Egyptology and Classical Philology . He received his doctorate in 1975, and in 1978 he became university lecturer for Hellenistic and Roman Egypt at the University of Vienna. In 1982 he completed his habilitation in Egyptology and was appointed university lecturer. Until 2012 he taught at the Institute for Ancient History and at the Institute for Egyptology at the University of Vienna. Since 1983, Hölbl has also taught at the University of Salzburg , from 2004 on at the Institute Beni Culturali at the University of Catania in Syracuse . In 1998 he was appointed associate professor in Vienna. His main occupation was from 1983 to 1993 research assistant at the Egyptian Commission of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and from 1993 to 2003 curator at the Egyptian-Oriental Collection of the Art History Museum in Vienna.

Günther Hölbl's specialist areas are the history and culture of Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt. Another main area of ​​work is research into the spread of ancient Egyptian culture and religion in the Mediterranean region.
