Günther Lorenz (ancient historian)

Günther Lorenz (* 1942 in Innsbruck ; † January 7, 2013 ) was an Austrian ancient historian .

Life

After studying history and German language and literature , Lorenz started working with Franz Hampl and Bernhard Neutsch at the University of Innsbruck in 1973 with the work The Greeks' attitude to animals. Her development from Homer to Theophrast (with an outlook on early Rome) is doing her doctorate . He completed his habilitation there in 1986 with the thesis on ancient medical treatment in a historical-comparative perspective. Studies on concrete, descriptive thinking and from then on headed the department for comparative history of early cultures at the Institute for Ancient History as an associate professor. In 1989, Lorenz was a visiting professor at the University of New Orleans . He retired on October 1st, 2007.

His main research interests were the comparative religious history of Greece, ancient medical history, cultural comparisons between ancient Rome and ancient China, and animals in the life of ancient cultures.
