Günther Schauerte (* 1954 in Fredeburg ) is a German archaeologist . Until the end of 2018 he was Vice President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation .

Life

Günther Schauerte studied Classical Archeology , Ancient History as well as Prehistory and Early History at the University of Münster and the Free University of Berlin . After working at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn (1983–1985), the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen (1984–1986) and at the Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne (1985–1986), he became an advisor to the General Director of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation in 1986. From 2002 to 2011 he was Deputy General Director of the National Museums in Berlin . On August 1, 2011, he succeeded Norbert Zimmermann as Vice President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation .

As an archaeologist he worked in Gadara in Jordan, among others . From 1991 to 1999 he was the managing director of the National Association of Museums in Berlin and became its first chairman in 1998. Schauerte is a member of the board of the German Museum Association and a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute as well as honorary professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Awards

In 2008 he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the Chevalier class.
