Günther XXX. (Schwarzburg)

Günther XXX. von Schwarzburg (* 1352 ; † July 17, 1416 in Arnstadt ) held the office of administrator of the Mark Brandenburg from 1403 to 1406 in community with his older brother Heinrich XX, with whom he shared the areas of Sondershausen , Frankenhausen and Arnstadt until 1411 and owned Blankenburg .

Life

Jobst von Moravia , the owner of the Kurland at the time , appointed them to decay in the Mark Brandenburg for the following reason. The Mark suffered not only from the wild feuds of the local nobility, but also from the attacks of Archbishop Albert von Magdeburg , who made claims to the firm Plane Castle near Brandenburg on the Havel. After a 20-year feud, a peace between Albert and the Mark finally came about on June 10, 1403 through the mediation of Günther. Albert died two days later and Günther's son of the same name took his place as Archbishop . Under these circumstances, Günther and his brother Heinrich had to appear as personalities capable of maintaining the good understanding between the Archbishopric and the Mark.

On October 23, 1408 Jobst first appointed them as officials over the Altmark and on November 24, 1403 he also transferred the Mittelmark to them in Berlin with the approval of the estates. On December 5, 1403, he instructed her, in the event of his death, to recognize his brother-in-law Wilhelm von Meißen , for whom he had used the mark in 1393 for a loan as pledge, as her master until the loan was paid off. With the best of intentions, the counts, especially Günther, now took over the administration; the latter also immediately experienced the whole difficulty of his new position. When he wanted to go to Tangermünde at the beginning of 1404 and was just crossing the Elbe, Dietrich von Quitzow suddenly attacked his entourage who were still on the bank and seized his luggage and his treasures.

This act not only went unpunished, but even seems to have raised the reputation of Dietrich von Quitzow, because from that time on the popularity is written, which he enjoyed among the Märkern for several years. In contrast, the statement made by the Brandenburg chronicler Engelb is incorrect. Wusterwitz that Günther resigned his office immediately after that attack, because he was still in charge of the administration of the country on May 20 and June 3, 1404 according to the Urkk. b. Riedel l, 17, he also joined on June 16, 1405, as a "manager of the brand z. Brand. ”With the dukes Rudolf and Albrecht of Saxony-Wittenberg and with Günther von Magdeburg to fight the robbers in their territories together. But not Günther alone, but also his brother Heinrich, still led the custody in 1405, because both enfeoffed as “Vorstendere of the brand z. Br. ”On July 14, 1405 at Tangermünde Günther von Bartensleben with the village of Berkau. Documentary edicts of the brothers regarding the Mittelmark do not exist and in a fight against Pomerania in 1404 it was not Günther but Dietrich von Quitzow who led the Mittelmark cities to victory.

The counts therefore seem to have limited themselves to the administration of the Altmark . They were not allowed to think of suppressing the feuds that were overgrowing in the Mittelmark, and so they may have finally resigned from their office. This must have happened in the year 1406, because on May 18, 1406 Jobst transferred the protection of the Mittelmark to Count Ulrich and Günther von Lindow-Ruppin , while from 1406 Günther von Bartensleben acted as a representative of Jobst in the Altmark and on behalf of the Margrave Issued fiefdoms.

The main merit of the counts for the mark is the preservation of peace with Magdeburg. The burgrave Friedrich of Nuremberg even found an ally in Günther von Magdeburg from 1412-1414 and a brother of the same helped him to conquer Plane Castle in 1414.
