Gürer Aykal

Gürer Aykal (born May 22, 1942 in Eskişehir ) is a Turkish conductor and associate professor at the Bilkent University in Ankara. From 1999 to 2009 he was general music director and chief conductor of the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra .

Life

Aykal studied violin with Necdet Remzi Atak and composition with Ahmed Adnan Saygun at the Ankara State Conservatory in the 1960s . He was then trained as a conductor by André Previn and George Hurst at the Guildhall School of Music in London . In 1973 he obtained a Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting from the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia . At Saygun's request, he stayed in Italy and studied Gregorian music and Renaissance music at the Pontifical Institute for Church Music .

Career

Aykal has conducted the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra , the English Chamber Orchestra , the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the NDR Symphony Orchestra , the Ankara Chamber Orchestra (which he founded together with Suna Kan ) and the Concertgebouw Orchestra . In 1975 he became chief conductor of the Turkish President's Symphony Orchestra in Ankara . From 1987 to 1991 Aykal was Music Director of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra in Texas and then from 1992 to 2004 Music Director of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra .

Aykal was the artistic director of the Antalya International Piano Festival in the summer of 2014.

Awards

In 1981 the Turkish government awarded him the honorary title of "State Artist". In 2008 he was made Honorary Conductor of the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra. In May 2008 he received the Finnish State Medal. In 2008 he also received the “International Prize for the Performing Arts” from the “Lazio between Europe and the Mediterranean” festival. In 2012 he received the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Grand Award .
