The D 4/4 were wet steam locomotives with a tender for the Gotthard Railway Company (GB), which Maffei and SLM delivered in two series from 1882 to 1901 . At the SBB , the freight locomotives were given the numbers 4101–4136 and 4001–4005.

1. Series No. 101-136

From 1882 onwards, the Gotthard Railway Company purchased 4/4 coupled locomotives with two-axle tender from Maffei in Munich to transport freight trains on the mountain routes on the Gotthard and Monte Ceneri . The 31 Munich machines were followed in 1895 by five largely identical locomotives no.132 to 136 manufactured by SLM in Winterthur.

In terms of design , the locomotives of the Bourbonnais type extended to four axles were to remain the only ones of their type in Switzerland. The four-axle design without running axles allowed the entire weight of the locomotive to be used as a friction weight .

Despite the long, rigid wheelbase and the large overhang, the machines proved their worth on the Gotthard. They allowed a trailer load of 180 tonnes to be carried up the mountain at a speed of 45 km / h. The large transport volumes meant that three locomotives were used on the mountain routes for freight trains weighing 500 tons. The trains were covered with a D 4/4 and a D 3/3 . Because the tow hook load allowed at the time was exceeded, another D 4/4 or D 3/3 was used as a pushing locomotive .

The locomotives of the first series were given the numbers 4101 to 4136 after nationalization by the SBB.

In 1916, 14 locomotives were sold to the Hungarian state railway Magyar Államvasutak (MÁV), the 4102, 4104, 4106, 4118, 4110, 4111, 4117, 4122, 4119, 4120, 4109, 4123, 4126 and 4127 as 434 , 001-014 queued. The nine locomotives 434.002–006, 434.008, 434.010, 434.012 and 434.013 came to the Romanian Căile Ferate Române (CFR) after the First World War ; the other five were retired from 1952 to 1962.

Five additional locomotives were to the Greek state railway Sidirodromoi Ellinikou Kratos sold (SEK), the 1922 locomotives 4105 and 4112 as Ηγ ( Eta - gamma ) 431 and 432 and the locomotives 4130, 4134 and 4135 as Ηδ (eta delta ) 441 to 443 queued.

Modification of the no.128

Machine no. 128 was equipped by SLM with a Brotan kettle on a trial basis in 1907 . The fire boxes , which at that time were almost exclusively made of copper, were to be replaced by a simpler design for reasons of cost.

2. Series No. 141-145

D 4/4 No. 141 built in 1901 by SLM

In 1901, the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works delivered another five machines from a slightly modified second series No. 141–145. These locomotives were fitted with a Pielock steam dryer in 1904/05 , which was replaced between 1907 and 1916 by the more effective Schmidt smoke tube superheater. The second series was the only version in Switzerland to have two steam domes connected by a pipe . The locomotives were given the designation D 4/4 No. 4001–4005 by the SBB.
