The Games Convention ( GC for short ) took place annually from 2002 to 2008 in Leipzig as a trade fair for interactive entertainment, infotainment , hardware and entertainment as well as computer games . It was an event organized by Leipziger Messe GmbH and the Federal Association of Interactive Entertainment Software (BIU) acted as the ideal sponsor until the end of 2008 .
Games Convention until 2008
The trade fair traditionally took place in the last week of August in all five halls of the Leipzig Exhibition Center and was open to the public from Thursday to Sunday, while an exclusive trade visitor day was planned for press representatives and dealers on Wednesday. It was the most important trade fair of its kind in Europe and in 2007 attracted 185,000 visitors, 503 exhibitors and over 3,300 press representatives from 46 countries. This made it the most important video game fair in the world alongside the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and the Tokyo Game Show . The exhibitors from 31 countries not only showed the latest games, but also started projects and future new releases. However, the fair was replaced in 2009 by gamescom in Cologne.
From 2002 to 2008, the GC served as both a trade fair and a public fair. While the business center was reserved for trade visitors, exhibitors and the press, the mostly young players filled the exhibition halls.
At the fair, value was placed on family friendliness. This was shown, among other things, by the so-called “GC Family”, which took up its own exhibition hall in 2006 and 2007 and mostly presented learning software. Also in the "GC Family" hall were USK , BPjM and bpb stands, which informed parents and teachers about the protection of minors, as well as stands from various universities of applied sciences that offered courses related to computer games. In 2008 this area was greatly reduced.
In order to make the efforts to protect minors clear at the fair, colored armbands were given out. Based on these exhibitors to visitors to the ages "from 6" (yellow), "From 12" lane (green), "From 16" (blue) and "Down 18" (red) and certain screenings only for those that reached the required age .
Two days before the actual event, the GCDC (Games Convention Developer Conference) for developers took place, on the day before the fair an opening concert was performed in the Leipzig Gewandhaus until 2007 (see game music concert ).
In 2008, a new visitor record was set with over 200,000 visitors.
Games Convention Online from 2009
The former ideal sponsor BIU has not supported the Games Convention since 2009, but the new Cologne trade fair gamescom . This withdrawal of a successful event from a structurally weak region provoked a divided press response.
However, Messe Leipzig announced that it wanted to hold the fair again in 2009 after the record number of visitors in 2008. Support was also announced by the Free State of Saxony and the City of Leipzig. The focus was now on online, mobile and browser games. The fair took place under a new name from July 31st to August 2nd as Games Convention Online . In addition to the classic face-to-face fair, visitors could also take part online. The Games Convention Online 2010 was instead a pure trade fair. The Games Convention Online was canceled by the organizer for 2011 and all subsequent years.
The Games Convention abroad
From September 2007 to 2009, the GCA Games Convention Asia, an Asian offshoot of the Games Convention, took place in Singapore .
The organizers also planned to host a games convention in North America.
