Willem Grasso laid the foundation stone for GEA Refrigeration Technologies in 1858 with his forge Willem Grasso Stoomsmederij in 's-Hertogenbosch , Netherlands . There he first manufactured steam engines and tools, later steam hammers and butter machines. His son Henri took over the company in 1894. The invention of margarine in 1896 gave the company a boost to success and made it famous for its special margarine machines. In the same year, Grasso founded a separate business division for refrigeration technology. The Second World War badly affected the factory, so that Grasso had to stop production of the margarine machines. After the war, Grasso concentrated on refrigeration technology. The company has been part of the GEA Group since 1991. Step by step, it expanded its range of products through several company acquisitions: In 1993, GEA Refrigeration Technologies bought GEA Grenco, a manufacturer of refrigeration technology for the food and shipping industry, and one year later the compressor specialist Kühlautomat Berlin GmbH (KAB, formerly VEB Kühlautomat Berlin ). In 1995 the Italian compressor manufacturer GEA Refrigeration Italy SpA joined them. In 2004, GEA Refrigeration Technologies took over Goedhart Holding BV, a Dutch manufacturer of air coolers and cooling coils. In 1999 the production company for reciprocating and screw compressor liquid chillers ILKA MAFA Kältemaschinenbau GmbH became a member of the GEA Group. In the following years up to the corporate restructuring of the GEA Group in January 2009, the company acquired what is now the specialist for industrial refrigeration technology FES, Inc. (now GEA FES, Inc.), USA; Morris & Young Ltd., London, Great Britain; the German valve manufacturer AWP (today GEA AWP GmbH) and the Canadian manufacturer of freezing systems for the food industry Aerofreeze (today GEA Aerofreeze). Furthermore, Eurotek (now Eurotek Engineering Ltd), Great Britain, and Intec (now GEA Intec) have been part of the GEA Group since 2009. Since the restructuring of the GEA Group, GEA Refrigeration Technologies has formed one of the group's six segments today. In the course of this, Goedhart switched to the GEA Heat Exchangers segment. In 2010, GEA Refrigeration Technologies acquired Bock Kältemaschinen GmbH (today GEA Bock GmbH), Frickenhausen . With the purchase, GEA Refrigeration expanded its portfolio of piston and screw compressors in the small and medium performance range. To expand its range of freezers, GEA Refrigeration Technologies acquired the conveyor belt specialist QPM Manufacturing, Bellevue , Washington , USA in 2011 . QPM produces steel conveyor belts for the transport of food in ovens and freezers.
