GNR (acronym for Grupo Novo Rock ) is a three-piece Portuguese rock band from Porto .

history

Until 1982

The band was formed in 1979 in a garage on Rua Airosa in the borough ( Freguesia ) Ramalde . However, it did not begin its activities until 1980, which is why it is usually mentioned as the year it was founded. The band name alludes ironically to the Portuguese security police Guarda Nacional Republicana , which is generally also abbreviated to GNR. The original line-up was Toli César Machado (drums), Alexandre Soares (guitar) and Vítor Rua (guitar). Bassist Mano Zé joined the band in 1979. Their first single Portugal na CEE (German: Portugal in the European Economic Community), a fast, poppy punk rock song, fell during the boom in Portuguese rock music and is still considered a distinctive song of the time. After another equally successful single, the debut album was released in 1982 under the title Independança (a play on words from Independent and Dança, English: dance), which was positively received by the critics, but achieved disappointing sales, also due to the less catchy title , about the 27-minute piece Avarias ( Eng .: Pannen), which took up the entire B-side of the LP.

The exit of Vítor Rua

After their concert at the Festival de Vilar de Mouros in 1982, Vítor Rua left the band to devote himself to other projects, especially electronic improvised music , such as his Telectu project . One reason, however, was also increasing differences within the group, which led to conflicts between Rua and GNR in the further course of the 1980s. Rua also took legal action against the band, who played songs by him from the early days of the group against his will. He also formed his own band called Pós-GNR (German: Nach-GNR), after he had previously maintained a project against GNR with PSP (abbreviation of the Portuguese police Polícia de Segurança Pública ) and thus published an LP. The dispute was only settled in the course of the 1990s.

Since 1982

In the period after 1982 the group experienced changes of line-up and a reorientation, and the new singer Rui Reininho was henceforth perceived as the head of the group. The band was previously inspired by Power Pop and early New Wave , but now their music has become slower and more harmonious. Influences of various independent music styles were audible, but decreased in importance in the course of the further career, in favor of traditional pop - rock patterns. In the following years they released a number of albums and singles and gave numerous concerts, also abroad, especially in Spain and France. In Galicia They engaged more frequently. They achieved increasing success, both with high sales of their publications, as well as with ever larger concerts, so that they became one of the most famous pop and rock bands in Portugal. Her live album In Vivo sold 40,000 copies in 1990, the following studio album Rock in Rio Douro sold 160,000 copies. When, after a phase of reduced band activity, a best of compilation was released in 1996 with the album Tudo o que você queria ouvir - O Melhor dos GNR (English: Everything you wanted to hear - The best of GNR), it sold 80,000 times and reached first place on the charts. Her texts, which are characterized by puns and poetic-critical passages, are seen as one of the reasons for her continued popularity, as well as her longstanding music creation, largely independent of trends, and her strong ties to the Porto region.

Her most recent published in summer 2011 album also reached Voos domésticos the number one in the Portuguese album charts.
