GNU Mailman is free software for managing email discussions and mailing lists .
development
Mailman is part of the GNU project and is almost exclusively written in the Python programming language . Small parts of the code are also available in C written.
System requirements
Mailman runs on most POSIX -based operating systems such as Unix , Mac OS X or Linux . Requirements for version 2.1 are also a web server with CGI 1.1 API support (e.g. Apache), a mail server and an installed Python interpreter from version 2.7. A Python interpreter version 3.4 is recommended for version 3.0 of Mailman. Mailman supports the integration into websites as well as the configuration via its own web interface .
distribution
Mailman is currently mainly used in educational institutions, but also for internal use in companies such as Apple , Dell Computers or Heise Verlag , as well as in associations such as the open source portal SourceForge . In addition, Mailman is often used on private servers for personal use. In addition to web hosts, there are also donation-based hosting offers such as from immerda.ch , which can only be used by invitation. Only at Mailmanlists.net can lists be requested for a fee without earmarking or access restrictions.
Alternatives
The Majordomo mailing list system , which is still widely used and does not require Python to be installed, is much older . However, Majordomo is no longer being developed and is comparatively complicated to use and configure according to modern standards.
Other alternatives are, for example, Ezmlm , Listserv , phpList , MailCtrl , GroupServer or Sympa .
