Sympa (fr. For "nice" or "sympathetic" Apronym of systems de Multi-Postage Automatique , German system for automated multiple-delivery ) is a software for managing mailing lists . Christophe Wolfhugel developed Sympa as the successor to TULP, a software with the same purpose that has not been further developed in the meantime.

Sympa is published under the GPL and is therefore free software .

properties

Since Sympa uses relational databases internally , it is usually faster than systems that handle their internal administration using simple text files. Because of this, the software is particularly suitable for use in environments with a large number of subscribers and / or high fluctuation. List administrators can dynamically generate subscriber lists from sources such as external databases and LDAP directories . Virtual mail domains are also supported by Sympa.

Furthermore, there is the possibility of emails via S / MIME to sign and encrypt .

A web interface provided for users, list and server administrators can be operated as a FastCGI service. About this Web interface also are RSS - web feeds of the mailing lists provided.

The diverse authentication options , including LDAP , CAS and Shibboleth, allow Sympa to be integrated into complex infrastructures. To protect against the spread of viruses, it is possible to have all incoming and outgoing emails checked by a virus scanner.

Since Sympa supports the UTF-8 character encoding , mailing lists can be displayed in a large number of languages.

history

Development began in 1995 when new functions were requested in TULP and it was discovered that the TULP source code was not robust enough to be able to integrate these new functions. Christophe Wolfhugel, who had been involved in the development of TULP, then began to write Sympa from scratch. It was almost two years before it was first published. In 1999 the web interface was added. Two years later, the developers expanded the range of functions to include S / MIME capabilities and the virus scanner plug-in.

The support of LDAP - authentication and for virtual hosting was published in of 2002. In September 2003, the options for authentication using CAS and Shibboleth followed. One month later, in December 2003, support for the SOAP interface became available.

The web interface underwent several changes in 2005. The markup language was changed from HTML to XHTML , mailing lists were now available via RSS feed. The last big step so far was the conversion of the character encoding to UTF-8 in 2006.

Since then, Sympa has been continuously developed and improved.
