The GR 11 (Spanish: Gran Recorrido 11 ), also known as Ruta Transpirenaica or La Senda Pirenaica , is part of the GR long-distance hiking network . It leads from the Atlantic coast through the Spanish and Andorran Pyrenees to the Mediterranean .

If you are walking west-east, the route begins at Cabo Higuer , crosses the Basque Country , Navarra , Aragon , Andorra and Catalonia and ends at Cap de Creus . The GR 11 is around 820 km long and overcomes differences in altitude of around 46,000 m. Average hikers complete the route in around 6 to 8 weeks, but very fast hikers can also complete the route in a shorter time (around 3 to 4 weeks).

The GR 10 is a similar route and runs on the French side of the Pyrenees. The HRP ( Haute randonnée pyrénéenne ), on the other hand, follows the main ridge of the Pyrenees, avoids descents and often crosses the French-Spanish border.

Route and stage division

Depending on the source, the route is divided into 44 to 45 stages and also includes several variants. At the end of each stage there is usually a strategically favorable location (campsite, city, hostel or hut). However, you usually have to bring food for at least 3 to 4 days. Since many rivers run across the GR 11, the path passes through a lot of valleys. This leads to very large differences in altitude on the way. The GR 11 can be climbed in both west and east directions.
