GUBU

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GUBU is an English acronym . It stands for grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unprecedented ("grotesque, unbelievable, bizarre and unheard of"). GUBU is widely spoken in Irish-English everyday language and is used on various extraordinary or unfortunate occasions.

These words are a paraphrase of a commentary by the Old Taoiseach of the Republic of Ireland , Charles Haughey , who described a series of disasters in the summer of 1982 that resulted in a newcomer double killer staying at the residence of the Irish Attorney General who made him received with open arms.

Haughey said verbatim at a press conference in 1982, "It was a bizarre happening, an unprecedented situation, a grotesque situation, an almost unbelievable mischance." ("It was a bizarre event, an unheard of situation, a grotesque situation, an almost unbelievable mishap")

The acronym was circulated by Conor Cruise O'Brien .

background

Malcolm MacArthur was an eccentric and well-known character in Dublin society and, thanks to a large inheritance, did not have to go to work. When his money ran low, he decided to commit robberies to improve his finances. He first bought a gun from Dónal Dunne in Edenderry , County Offaly, and later murdered him with his own gun to cover up tracks. He stole a getaway car from nurse Bridie Gargan, who was sunbathing in Phoenix Park in Dublin . He knocked her down with a hammer, maneuvered the struggling woman into the back seat of the car and sped away. An oncoming ambulance thought he was a doctor on the emergency service because of the ambulance sticker on Gargan's car. MacArthur parked the car in downtown Dublin and started looking for accommodation. He thought of an employee of the Attorney General Patrick Connolly , with whom his wife Brenda Little was friends. There he was granted entry without any problems. When MacArthur attacked the American Harry Beiling and this was able to escape, MacArthur's identity as a murderer was revealed. He was sentenced to a term of imprisonment that he has not yet served - only for the murder of Gargan.

consequences

The Attorney General of Ireland had to resign and the entire government was in deep crisis.
