history

After a long planning phase with different concepts to establish a new AFL club in Greater Western Sydney, the AFL decided to found a new club in 2008. The global economic crisis that started in 2008 delayed the process further as financial resources became increasingly scarce. The club was finally founded in 2009, the first test matches were played from 2010 and the move to the Australian Football League finally followed in 2012. The first season was marked by high defeats for the Giants , including five defeats with a difference of more than 100 points. With a record of two wins and 20 defeats, GWS finished last in the table at the end of the season and received the Wooden Spoon as the worst team in the AFL. The 2013 season began for the Giants with 18 defeats in a row, rather the Melbourne Demons could be defeated on matchday 19. Nevertheless, GWS continued to rank last in the table and again had to accept the "win" of the Wooden spoon . In the years that followed, significant improvements were made, and the team ended the 2015 season for the first time with a balanced record (11 wins, 11 losses) in eleventh place in the table. In 2016, the Giants achieved a strong fourth place in the regular season and moved into the finals for the first time , where they were only subject to the Western Bulldogs in the preliminary final (the penultimate round) .
