Gaël Faye
Gaël Faye (* 1982 in Bujumbura in Burundi ) is a French writer and singer.
Life
Gaël Faye is the son of a French father and a Rwandan mother. He grew up in Burundi , the family lived in Bujumbura .
Due to the civil war in Rwanda , which also affected Burundi, he left his homeland in 1995. He fled to France , later studied economics and worked as an investment banker in London for two years . He then returned to France to devote himself to music and writing.
The French TV channel France Ô broadcast a documentary that accompanied Gaël Faye on a music tour through Burundi and Rwanda: In Quand deux fleuves se rencontrent (Eng: When two rivers meet ) Faye visits the places of his childhood together with the musician Edgar Sekloka.

In 2016 he published his first novel, Petit pays (Eng. Small Country ), in which he dealt with his childhood in Burundi and the history of his family. In it, he depicts the happy childhood and the shadows of the approaching civil war from the child's carefree point of view.
The book was nominated for numerous prizes, including the Prix Goncourt . It received the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens , the Prix du premier roman français and the literary prize of the retail chain FNAC . A German edition was published in 2017. Since there is another translation into Dutch, the work was proposed for the Euregio Student Literature Prize in 2018 .
music
Together with Edgar Sekloka, Gaël Faye performed as a hip-hop duo, under the name Milk Coffee and Sugar . In 2015 the formation broke up.
In 2013 Gaël Faye released his first solo album: Pili Pili sur un croissant au beurre .
Gaël Faye has worked with a wide variety of artists including: Mulatu Astatke , Bonga Kuenda , Ben l'Oncle Soul , Saul Williams , Tumiolekane, Oxmo Puccino , Pauline Croze, Akua Naru , Sly Johnson , Mamani Keïta, Beat Assailant, Flavia Coelho and Christophe Maé .
