Euregio student literature prize
The Euregio Student Literature Prize (Dutch: Euregio literatuurprijs voor scholieren / French: Prix littéraire des lycéens de l'Euregio ) is an international literary prize of the German-Dutch-Belgian border region Euregio Meuse-Rhine , which has been awarded annually since 2002. With the participation of 200 to 400 pupils from more than twenty secondary schools in Belgium , the Netherlands and Germany , the winners will be determined from six books nominated by the EuregioKultur eV association .
Two books each written in German, Dutch and French will be selected. Most of them are novels, but short stories and short stories are also nominated. There are translations of all six books into the other two project languages so that all students can read the works in their mother tongue. In the run-up to the selection of the winners, information events, readings by the nominated authors, workshops, panel discussions and jury meetings will take place over several weeks.
The award ceremony takes place alternately in Aachen (2002 to 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019), Eupen (Belgium, 2008, 2014, 2017), Liège (Belgium, 2012, 2018), Vaals (Netherlands, 2011) and Maastricht (Netherlands , 2009, 2015). The prize money is 5,000 euros and is donated by the community foundation for the Aachen region and the EuregioKultur association , which also takes on the organization.
In 2019, Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen , Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, is the patron of this project, which spans state and language borders .
In addition to the Euregio Student Literature Prize for one author, there are prizes for the two translators of a title. The prize money for the winning translations is € 1,000 each.
The prize is part of a larger network with the same goal, which is called "The Euregio Reads" and offers numerous events, both in schools and in bookstores or public libraries.
Participation of schools
All secondary schools from the Euregio Meuse-Rhine border region can take part in the Euregio Student Literature Prize project. At least five students between the ages of 15 and 20 should take part in each school. In autumn, teachers from the region will be invited to a first information event. The six nominated books will be made available to the schools in the respective languages. The pupils have until spring to read and evaluate all six nominated books. In addition, they have the opportunity to take part in author readings and panel discussions on the books. In the spring, the 200 to 400-strong school jury meets to talk about the favorite books and vote on the winners. The highlight of the Euregio Schoolchildren's Literature Prize is the award ceremony in a festive atmosphere.
