Adriaan van Dis (born December 16, 1946 in Bergen , the Netherlands ) is a Dutch writer .

Life

youth

Adriaan van Dis was born in the Dutch village of Bergen in 1946. His parents, Marie van Dis and Victor Justin Mulder, met in Indonesia , the former Dutch East Indies. Marie van Dis already had three daughters from her first marriage. Adriaan van Dis's parents and siblings experienced the Japanese occupation of Dutch East India (1941–1949) up close. Adriaan van Dis was born in 1946 into a war-torn family that had only recently returned to Holland. Since he was the only one in the family who had not witnessed the war and life in India, he was the family's outsider. Even in the village of Bergen aan Zee, where the family shared an apartment with other members of the Dutch-East Indian community, he lacked the experience of the former colony in these surroundings. Adriaan van Dis got his mother's surname because his father was already married to another woman. Divorce from his wife was recognized under Islamic law, but not under Dutch law. In his youth this secret had to be kept and van Dis called himself Mulder to the outside world. With the beginning of his studies, however, he began to bear the name van Dis publicly.

education

After graduating from MULO, he trained as a teacher at the Rijkskweek School and then graduated from the Hogere Burger School (HBS). Adriaan van Dis then studied Dutch and Afrikaans at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.

Working life

author

After completing his studies, Van Dis opted for writing after a detour via literary journalism (with the cultural supplement of the daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad and with the Zaterdags Bijvoegsel ). His first work Nathan Sid was published in 1983. In 2008 van Dis participated in the International Literature Festival in Berlin. An important focus of his texts is the use of antitheses , in particular the representation of cultural and socio-economic differences. In addition, the main character often has the perspective of an outsider who has to learn to find his way around on a small scale (e.g. in his family) or in the big world (e.g. as a Dutchman in Africa or China). Adriaan van Dis has won several literary prizes . In addition to his literary work, van Dis occasionally publishes articles in daily newspapers, for example on the occasion of Queen Beatrix's resignation .

watch TV

From 1983 to 1992 van Dis had his own TV program on VPRO: Here is ... Adriaan van Dis . As a talk show host of this program, he received many domestic and foreign guests, such as Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Umberto Eco . The television show got the 1985 Nipkowschijf, an award for the best television show of the year. In recent years, van Dis has appeared every year as part of book week on the television program De wereld draait door , in which Here is ... Adriaan van Dis revives for a short time. In 2008 he made the television series Van Dis in Africa . For this series he got the Nipkowschijf again.
