Here is ... Adriaan van Dis (German: Here is ... Adriaan van Dis ) is a Dutch talk show by the broadcasting company VPRO with guests from all over the world, including artists, writers and scientists. The moderator is the Dutch writer Adriaan van Dis . The show was first recorded in 1983 at the De Ysbreeker Theater in Amsterdam. The interviews were conducted in Dutch and in English. In 1986 Van Dis received the Zilveren Nipkowschijf for the best television program. Van Dis's talk show continued under the title Van Dis in de Balie and later under Van Dis in de IJsbreker in 1987 . The latter ran until May 3, 1992.
history
Here is ... Adriaan van Dis was originally not planned as a show about books and writers, but rather as a talk show with many different guests. In a letter entitled La formula c'est moi , Adriaan van Dis presented his idea for the program to radio director Arend Jan Heerma van Voss . It should be an exciting talk show, led by a personality who defies and contradicts and thinks for itself. The guests should be valued and taken seriously.
The first program was broadcast on March 16, 1983 and opened with the writer Hugo Claus . He talked about his young years, his experiences with nuns and about the Catholic faith. The writer Charlotte Mutsaers and the then twelve-year-old Daniel van der Velde , a draftsman and reader of military combat studies, were also guests.
Van Dis's talk show was broadcast eight times a year. As more and more writers were invited, the subtitle boekenprogramma (German: book program) was chosen in 1985. After nine years, the last episode was shown on May 3, 1992. The show was seventy-two hours long. In the bookstore, people talked for a long time about the so-called Van Dis effect. Writers who were guests of Van Dis often saw that their works sold significantly better in the bookstore the next day.
reception
Despite the praise that the program received many years later, the program was criticized in the newspapers of the time. Criticisms were, for example, that the program was too elitist. Van Dis's clothing and accent have also been criticized. In those days the written press saw television primarily as a competitor; and particularly criticized the rare attempts to bring culture to the screen.
Van Dis did not envision the target group as an intellectual or cultural elite, but saw in them the eighteen-year-old student he once was, an arduous reader with a hunger for knowledge. He tried to introduce writers and their world of ideas in the hope that the viewer would then like to get to know his works. Although he did not want to overestimate the importance of books, he pointed out that literature can cause excitement as well as relaxation. With a little luck, a good book will make people see the world differently.
A hundred conversations
In May 2008, director Ellen Jens selected a selection of 100 from over 200 interviews carried out in the program, which were then divided into 30 new one-hour episodes. Before each episode, Adriaan van Dis remembers the guests. The episodes were released on a five-part DVD box.
